I'm writing this review as a native Newporter (now living in Venice, CA) who goes back east fairly often to visit family. I've always stayed in hotels in the past, until this most recent visit, and renting this place has changed everything! No more hotels!! Only Clamalot.
We fell in love the minute we walked in the door.
This peaceful, dreamy little cottage was perfect in so many ways...secluded yet close to town, no-frills but with just the right amount of amenities (no tv but fast wifi), charming & rustic while clean & fresh.
The queen size bed was very comfortable, the shower was great, kitchen was stocked with the basics (pots, pans, utensils, coffee maker), there were plenty of fresh towels, ample closet space, and there is a washer and dryer on site (which comes in handy on an extended trip).
We spent every morning watching the birds and enjoying coffee at the outside table, and every evening staring at the stars while listening to the chirping of frogs and crickets (this place is a nature lovers dream).
Clamalot is like a little hidden gem tucked away in Middletown but conveniently close to downtown Newport, all of the surrounding beaches, the Norman Bird Sanctuary, Sachuest Point, and (maybe most importantly) Sweet Berry Farm.
But be forewarned...even with all these wonderful attractions, you'll be tempted to curl up with a good book and never leave the cottage!
The owner John was as gracious and welcoming as the cottage itself. He was completely unobtrusive but always available if we needed anything.
We have stayed at a lot of vacation rental properties over the years, and I can honestly say they don't get much more special than this.
We will definitely be back to Clamalot, hopefully for a much longer stay next time.
