Paradise in Atenas
This Bali style home is beautiful and the views are breathtaking! Leticia the property manager was excellent and helped us with taxis and restaurant recommendations and checked in to make sure everything was okay. Can't wait to go back!
Great stay!!! The property is stunningly beautiful. The pictures do not fully capture the beauty of the grounds, decor, nature. Everything that you need is there. Diana and Leticia were very helpful and responded quickly to all my questions. The views are AMAZING! Being in a gated community we felt safe the entire time. If staying in Atenas would recommend eating at Kay's. Also did the El Toledo Coffee tour which was very informational and run by a great family. If willing to travel a little bit further would recommend beaches near Playa Blanca, the Sibu Chocolate tour and La Finca Caballo Horse tour. As others have stated, this location is ideal if you don't want to be too far from the airport but want a central location to explore Costa Rica. If you are going to travel outside of Atenas rent a car (4WD required). Still, I wish we would have spent less time away from the house and more time enjoying it but there is always next time!
During our last day Leticia helped arrange for someone to come prepare a traditional Costa Rican meal. This meal was delicious and my daughter greatly enjoyed the tortilla demonstration. If that is something that you might be interested in doing, I highly recommend it.
Wish I Was Still There
I'm writing this review less than 24 hours after having left the property and am desperately missing the gorgeous, ever-changing views from the balcony, cool breezes, nature sounds, bird sightings, butterflies, and even the visits from the groundskeeper's cat and dog, and the list goes on and on and on. I've always felt like I've had a knack for finding great VRBO rentals but this one may have topped them all! It is simply gorgeous and it's true what others have said....pictures don't do it justice. We were a family of four traveling with two teenagers (ages 17 &19). We rented a 4-wheel drive, a complete necessity! The house is a great jumping off point for day trips. As other reviewers have stated, think carefully about staying at this location with small children. Each bedroom is separate and very private from each other which could be challenging for young families. Leticia, the property manager met us in town after our flight and led us to the house. She was attentive and gave us great suggestions for things to do and was quick to respond if we had questions throughout the week. Some of the trips we made: Hiked to Las Minas waterfall (can swim in the falls), Toledo Coffee Tour (way exceeded our expectations), La Paz Waterfall Gardens, Arenal Volcano and Playa Mantas & Playa Blanca (spend some time researching how to get to Playa Blanca. It's worth it!) The house is located at the end of a road within a small, private, gated community. Spend time just walking up and down the drive to the house. One, it's a GREAT workout and two, you will find all sorts of nature to gawk at. One night we saw an incredible line of leaf cutter ants and watched them defoliate a plant. During the day we saw big iguanas, colorful birds, an enormous termite nest and all sorts of other things. I don't often like to vacation in the same place twice but this may be one place I break my rule for!
Gorgeous home. A slice of paradise!
Hidden in the scenic mountains of Atenas, a short drive from San Jose airport, Diana’s home was the perfect place to experience Costa Rica and the Pura Vida. Our stay was flawless from start to finish .
A slice of paradise, this exquisitely decorated Balinese inspired home belongs in the pages of Architectural Digest. Every detail from the furnishings to the bed linens to the beautiful gardens and the views - has been meticulously considered. And oh those views! We loved waking at 6am to the sounds of the birds on the balcony, sipping a tea while we watched the sun rise in the valley. Divine!
We stayed as a couple but the villa is so roomy and spacious, we would love to return with our whole family. Each of the three suites offers wonderful privacy and is elegantly presented. The kitchen was perfect for cooking in and we enjoyed sampling the local produce which is of excellent quality. Much time was spent in the gardens and the pool which was just heavenly and so relaxing. Even when temperatures were high, the location of the Villa in the mountains and their temperate conditions, kept us cool. Our daily walks through the mountains were a wonderful adventure. The local people are so warm and kind and open to sharing their culture. We met a local guitar maker on one of our walks, who crafts the most beautiful instruments by hand and invited us into his studio.
Leticia, the property manager, went above and beyond to assist us during our stay and Diana herself shared some fantastic recommendations for local restaurants and excursions. We travelled down to Uvita to the incredible beach and national park and ate the most delicious fried fish! What’s amazing about Costa Rica is the range of landscapes and terrain in such a small country. Driving there is truly breathtaking.
If you are looking for a get away that transports you to a place of pure peace, then this is for you. We have fallen in love with Atenas and with Costa Rica, and simply cannot wait to return and stay at this unique residence again.
Beautiful and Peaceful
We had such a wonderful time at the house in Atenas! Barely wanted to go anywhere as we had everything we wanted right there: a fabulous pool, the sounds of the birds and the marvelous view from the porch where we watched the weather change and the sun rise and set. Truly heaven on earth!
Beautiful surroundings, beautiful house!
Had a little hiccup communicating with Leticia when we arrived in San Jose. We were supposed to call her when we were getting our rental car, which I did, but then we had a problem with the rental car so it took longer than anticipated. Our 3 girls at this point hadn't eaten in a long time and were starving so I called Leticia to let her know we had to stop to get them something to eat. She was not pleased that we had stopped and told me to hurry as she was waiting for us and had another obligation, which I felt badly about, but we had to feed our girls. She was able to tell me instructions for how to get to the house and get in, which ended up being quite easy, as long as you have google maps! Besides that, and forgetting the gate keys the first day, it was all good. The house is beautifully decorated and our girls loved the pool! There are a lot of bugs and it is quite warm, as there is no AC. It is also quite far away from a lot of things we wanted to do- beaches, la Fortuna...so we did a lot of driving. The dog, although darling, kept us up at night and woke us up every day so if you like to sleep in be aware.
Again it's a beautiful house and it was wonderful sitting on the deck watching the birds and listening to the thunder at night. Thank you for having us Diana! (I'm sorry about the misunderstanding with Leticia.)
Hi Dolly, i am glad you appreciated our home. I'm at the house this week, and It's only 6:30am and I've already seen Tucans, hummingbirds, Kingfishers, at least a half dozen other species while i watched the cows graze on the farmer's property below. As you saw, we overlook a huge protected valley, and there are a couple of small farms below - our lovely doggie is locked in at night, so she is innocent of all charges!! A farmer's dog was barking at who knows what that night....it happens every once in a great while (or you can hear a cow moo, or birds who arise early, or other sounds).. And i am glad you found your way to the house so easily . Since Costa Rica is a foreign country for most of our visitors, we like to provide a personal meeting at the beginning of your stay so that you can know Leticia, and feel safe, not just a key. Especially if you have an emergency during your stay. If you read over our reviews, our guests have taken the time to complement her highly for her availability and cordiality so, I am sorry you felt a different vibe. I wasn't there, but I know that Leticia feels an obligation to meet our guests, and had set aside 2 hours or more that day to meet with you...i am sure she was anxious to be able to meet her obligation, so i am sorry that was communicated to you. Leticia does like to be able to show you the house, and all its amenities, however, so maybe you didn't see that there were fans in every bedroom and a huge one in the main house. On weeks where the hottest temp is 85 degrees, as it was that week, it is just heavenly where we are since we have 30' overhangs over our veranda and it keeps it just a lovely temp.
We hope to have you again. There are so many amazing places close by, for instance there is a double waterfall that you can swim in (unlike the one at Fortuna which has a lot of tourists) only 25 min from here, and we could help you make better use of your time and less driving. Pura Vida!
