Even better in person!
This place was simply amazing! The pictures do not adequately show off this house. We were 800 feet from homemade donuts to the right and 800 feet from Amazing Pizza (actual name) to the left, plus 800 feet to the public park - that’s basically a 5 minute stroll from the front door. Salem was so much fun, so was taking the train in to Boston, but this house made the trip! We will definitely stay here again!!
Bedrooms were spacious, bathrooms had plenty of room and good plumbing, the kitchen had all the equipment we needed to feed our large group. Window units kept the bedrooms cool at night, if they were even needed.
The outside sitting area was outrageous! Just WOW!
The house is very charming and unique and the age of the home made it so much more enjoyable. The kids loved exploring throughout the home. It had a very nice porch and patio area to sit out on in the morning for breakfast and coffee before the others awoke. The house sits on a small yard, where again, the kids loved running around and having fun. It is within walking distance of EVERYTHING. The commons have a playground area which was great for the kids.
The only drawbacks were as we arrived, we were told by a person with the home that there was a leak in the back downstairs sink, so we couldn't use it until the repair man came. She indicated it would be very soon, but they never came. This made it a little inconvenient since there were eight of us, not able to use that sink where the shower is. A recommendation for the owner is to replace two of the mattresses on the second floor, and some of the pillows on the first floor bedroom since they are well worn.
Another positive is that we weren't sure of all the minor items that we would need, so we ended up bringing too many personal items. There was already a Keurig Coffee maker (it indicated a coffee pot was there) but we brought our own and used ours. Several previous Individuals had left some food behind (sealed and ready to eat) so we did the same. Very helpful.
Mr. Schlack was a little hard to contact sometimes, but we found out later that he was traveling, so that is understandable. Normally, I'm sure he is very easy to contact from the other reviews. The 4th of July fireworks was an easy walk, even with the kids - and the fireworks were terrific. We highly recommend this property!
Good Salem Location
We enjoyed our stay very much. The kitchen had everything we needed and the house is centrally located to everything. There were a few things that we would have done to make the house a little more "homey". The back bedroom on the first floor didn't have any curtains/blinds at the 2 windows, we bought plastic tableclothes and taped them up. The best mattresses are on the 3rd floor, but there is no bathroom up there, so we ended up not using that floor at all, the mattresses in the other rooms left a little to be desired. Barely had enough toilet paper to last through the 5 days we were there and most of it was 1 ply. Spring for 2 ply!
Great house for a large group with lots of character!
Nine of us shared this house for a weekend retreat, and it was the perfect place for a quiet getaway for a group of adults. The property is exactly as advertised by the owner. It is an older home, but has lots of character. There were enough bathrooms that we didn't feel the pinch even with a large group, and all of the bathrooms are modern and in good shape. We really liked the "family" feel of the place; it had a variety of different rooms and the dining room held all of us. The house also had easy access to the Common, the water, and the town of Salem. Very pleased; we would definitely stay here again.
Great charm and location!
A charming home in a perfect location! Our family of 12 stayed here comfortably. We spent most of our time in the dinning room. The house was spacious so we all had our privacy! This house is old and not perfect but that is what makes it charming! The owner was very kind and helpful, we would definitely stay again!
Great location, interesting historical property
The house was as expected; the owner emphasized that it is not a hotel, it's a 200 year old house, some windows don't open, the doors don't fit and the floors are squeaky and uneven. This just added to the true character of the house. The house was clean and everything was serviceable. Modern kitchen and bathrooms and plenty of room for the seven of us. If you have small kids, the stairs to the attic bedrooms are narrow, steep and have a small landing at the top, it might not be ideal; our youngest is 14 so it wasn't an issue with us. The location is great; nice neighborhood, walking distance to the Commons, and all the nearby attractions. We drove into Boston four days during our stay...yes, Boston traffic sucks, but it was nice to come back home to Salem and relax. There is a nice patio out back with gas and charcoal grills. This house was perfect for us.
