Equipt. Our kids
Loved walking around the property, our dogs loved all the new smells and the easy access to the lake.
We had a wonderful stay.
The lake is amazing
Let me start by saying the lake is amazing! It truly is a private lake. We floated, canoed, fished, and played in the water everyday for hours. You can see the lake from the house, but to get to the entrance, you have to walk through the woods which takes only about 2 minutes.
To be honest- we weren’t as happy with the house. It wasn’t as clean as we are used to. There was dog hair on the rugs. The recyclable trash was still full in the kitchen trash cans. There was still opened food in the refrigerator. (All of which made us a little nervous to wonder if it had been cleaned after the previous renters) There is no AC! We stayed the end of July, beginning of Aug and the temps were in the low 90’s. There is a cross flow in the evening with the windows open. However, the next morning we all woke up with mosquito bites due to the holes and tears in most of the window screens. So we had to close up the windows and lay under the ceiling fans. When we tried to make out the twin mattress in the living room, there were dried dead bugs. The only way it will sleep 7 is if 2 sleep on the couches. More than a handful of times, we found big black ants crawling around on the floor. Even with the house closed up, we were visited by a bat 3 different days. The refrigeration drawers in the kitchen is unique. Since one set of the refrigerator drawers wasn’t working, we had to use the extra frig in the garage. That would have been fine, however it still had opened food from the previous renter, and overall wasn’t clean. The house is a little older and you can tell. It just needs a little more attention to cleanliness and maintenance.
Some positives- You are one with nature! We saw numerous baby frogs. We were visited by deer and geese daily. The grill and fire pit are awesome. The kitchen had everything we needed, but they were very well used. We did enjoy the waffle maker and blender. The master bathroom was nice. Lake Siskiyou Camp and Resort is close by. We walked the numerous trails in the area and the views are breathtaking.
The lake is a definite 5
The house is a 2
So overall, we give it a 3
My wife and I stayed here mid-week in the summer. We used it as as a base camp for excursions to see waterfalls and hike to mountain lakes nearby. Beautiful property, would definitely go again.
Beautiful setting with great location to hiking opportunities.
We saw this property on Homeaway and have had some bad luck with past properties. All I can say is one word for this place: magical. We arrived to find tiny charming California toads just hatched hopping around the land. My husband and I are nature freaks so we were delighted to see this. We're also bird lovers and were not disappointed. There are a pair of sandhill cranes that showed up in the evening, not a common sight to see. Canadian geese protected their goslings in the nearby pond. Bullfrogs croak and animals and birds make beautiful noises at night. Also there is a view of Mt Shasta right from the property. We were there to view the wildflowers at higher elevations and did just that. And that's just outside.
Inside the place is clean, spacious and well suited for our two dogs. There is a gourmet kitchen with refrigeration and freezers built into the center island. There are floor to ceiling windows so views are fantastic. There is a secure porch in the house perfect for dogs. They loved watching all the animal action on the pond. The place feels isolated, which we loved, but town is just 10 minutes away. We rent houses frequently and I say this property was one of our top three.
While there in the summer, it was unseasonably hot and the house has ceiling fans but no air conditioning (at least we couldn't find a thermostat). It gets cool at night so that makes up the difference but it was hot in the daytime in the house, fyi
There was also a miscommunication on the website. It stated the house was a certain price and we ended up paying $100 more per night. We didn't question it because we had a good time but the prices on the website were averaged out so make sure you understand the real price before you pay up.
Finally we couldn't have been more pleased with Sylvia the owner. She gives great advice on what to do up there. I was looking for a particular wildflower and she knew where it was! I have been looking for this flower for years and it was right there. Also the wildflowers in the Sierras are different from the flowers in the Cascades. Be prepared to see lots of carnivorous pitcher plants and gorgeous fragrant azaleas in the early summer. I'll stop now. Needless to say, we would love to come back and plan a fall trip back.
